Apple Hit By Flashback Trojan
Apple users are being warned that their computers could be at risk from infection by the Flashback trojan.
The warning was sounded by Russian antivirus company Dr Web which said that as many as 600,000 Macs could be infected and used as "botnets".
Apple has issued a security update but Dr Web says many people have not accessed the patch, possibly because they believe Apple is not vulnerable to virus attack.
Flashback surfaced for the first time last when anti-virus teams picked up software that was disguised as a Flash Player update .Anyone who innocently downloaded it was unaware that it deactivated some of the security software on their computer.
Analysis showed the malware was able to exploit weaknesses in Java programming. Dr Web said that once the trojan was installed it sent a message to the intruder's control server with a unique ID to identify the infected machine.
Dr Web said it had not yet seen any illegal activity related to the trojan but said the malware had the potential to be used by criminal gangs trying to make money illegally.
The Russian company said the largest number of botnets was in the US, Canada, UK and Australia so that it appears to have been aimed at English speaking people.
Dr Web also said that more than 250 infected computers appeared to be in Cupertino, California, an Apple base.
Java's developer, Oracle, issued a fix to the problem in February but this was no use for Macintoshes as Apple controls Java updates to its computers. Apple released its own update a few weeks later.
Although Apple's software restricts what a computer can do without requesting their users' permission, analysts say the incident shows that they can be compromised.
One analyst said:"It is is simply not to true to say that an Apple machine cannot get infected."
Meanwhile complaints about problems with the iPad 3's wi-fi connections have surfaced on Apple's own support forums. Many people are complaining the new iPad has problems involving range and quality of connection, as well as seemingly related entire system crashes. Intermittent problems, such as cut outs, have also been logged.
Some people are even complaining that it might be on a level with the iPhone 4 reception problems. The Apple forum is full of complaints. No one has yet said if they think it is a hardware or software issue.
